Aysheaia was named by Walcott (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-l Cm uMid-l Sepkoski's reference number: 883]. Its type is Aysheaia pedunculata.

It was assigned to Aysheaidae by Walcott (1911); to Onychophora by Briggs et al. (1994); and to Lobopoda by Sepkoski (2002).
