Taxonomy
Hallucigenia was named by Conway Morris (1977) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1126]. Its type is Hallucigenia sparsa. It is the type genus of Hallucigeniidae. It was considered paraphyletic by Smith and Ortega-Hernández (2014) and Smith and Caron (2015).

It was assigned to Hallucigeniidae by Conway Morris (1977); to Lobopoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Lobopodia by Bambach et al. (2007); to Onychophora by Smith and Ortega-Hernández (2014); and to Hallucishaniids by Smith and Caron (2015).
