Setaspis was named by Raasch (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Trep-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1031]. Its type is Setaspis spinulosus.
It was assigned to Merostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aglaspididae by Størmer (1955), Hesselbo (1992), Ortega-Hernandez et al. (2013) and Lerosey-Aubril et al. (2017).
