Chasmataspis was named by Caster and Brooks (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi]. It is not extant. Its type is Chasmataspis laurencii. It is the type genus of Chasmataspididae.
It was assigned to Chasmataspidida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chasmataspididae by Bergström (1975), Dunlop et al. (2003) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
