It was recombined as Voluta spinosa by Lamarck (1802) and Wood (1844); it was recombined as Athleta spinosus by Kemp (1976); it was recombined as Athleta (Volutospina) spinosus by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); it was recombined as Athleta (Volutospina) spinosa by Harzhauser et al. (2009).
