Taxonomy
Paleolimulus was named by Dunbar (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 359]. It is the type genus of Paleolimulidae, Paleolimuloidea. It was considered polyphyletic by Lamsdell (2016).
It was assigned to Xiphosurida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Paleolimulidae by Raymond (1944), Størmer (1955), Bergström (1975), Babcock et al. (2000), Lamsdell (2016), Lamsdell (2020), Dunlop et al. (2020) and Bicknell et al. (2022).
