Weinbergina was named by Richter and Richter (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Weinbergina opitzi. It is the type genus of Weinberginidae.
It was assigned to Xiphosurida by Sepkoski (2002); to Prosomapoda by Lamsdell (2013); and to Weinberginidae by Størmer (1955), Bergström (1975) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
