Carcinosoma was named by Claypole (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Carcinosomatidae, Carcinosomatoidea.
It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Carcinosomatidae by Størmer (1955), Dunlop et al. (2013) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
