Taxonomy
Dolichopterus was named by Hall (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl D Sieg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is the type genus of Dolichopteridae.

It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dolichopteridae by Størmer (1955), Dunlop et al. (2013) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
