Hibbertopterus

Taxonomy
Hibbertopterus was named by Kjellesvig-Waering (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise C Serp Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. Its type is Hibbertopterus scouleri. It is the type genus of Hibbertopteridae.

It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hibbertopteridae by Kjellesvig-Waering (1959), Lamsdell et al. (2010), Dunlop et al. (2020) and Braddy et al. (2023).

Diagnosis

carapace (no anterior process) with angular genal lobes.
Centrally located arcuate eyes with narrow visual area, surrounded
by orbital ridges (annular thickened cuticle). Anterior
appendages with broad spines (blades) with sensory setae, more
closely spaced distally. Walking legs with Laden (but not longitudinal
posterior grooves on the podomeres). Cleft metastoma.
Telson hastate, with straight lateral margins and paired ventral
keels.
