Kiaeropterus was named by Waterston (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); to Stylonuridae by Tetlie et al. (2007); and to Rhenopteridae by Lamsdell et al. (2010) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
