Illaenus conifrons was named by Billings (1859). Its type specimen is GSC 1322 (lectotype) and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Hydrolaenus conifrons by Raymond (1916); it was recombined as Thaleops conifrons by Twenhofel (1938) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
