Onychopterella was named by Størmer (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: S Prid Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Onychopterelloidea, Onychopterellidae.
It was assigned to Eurypteridae by Størmer (1955); to Erieopteridae by Braddy et al. (1995); to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Onychopterellidae by Dunlop et al. (2013) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
