Taxonomy
Cheirurus pompilius was named by Billings (1865). Its type specimen is GSC 1317 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Ceraurus pompilius by Raymond (1905); it was recombined as Ceraurinus pompilius by Raymond (1925) and Twenhofel (1938); it was recombined as Ceraurinella pompilia by Shaw (1968).
