Taxonomy
Rhenopterus was named by Størmer (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-u D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Rhenopteridae, Rhenopteroidea.

It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); to Rhenopterinae by Lamsdell et al. (2010); and to Rhenopteridae by Størmer (1955) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
