Stylonurus was named by Page (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi Sepkoski's reference number: 360]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Stylonuridae, Stylonuroidea.
It was assigned to Eurypterida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stylonuridae by Størmer (1955) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
