Palaeoisopus was named by Broili (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l]. Its type is Palaeoisopus problematicus. It is the type genus of Palaeoisopodidae.
It was assigned to Palaeoisopoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Pycnogonida by Siveter et al. (2004); and to Palaeoisopodidae by Dunlop et al. (2020).
