Cheloniellida was named by Broili (1932). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Lerosey-Aubril et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Merostomoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Vicissicaudata by Ortega-Hernandez et al. (2013); and to Vicissicaudata by Lerosey-Aubril et al. (2017).
