Cyclus was named by de Koninck (1841) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l P l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Americlus americanus. It is the type genus of Cyclidae.
It was assigned to Cyclida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyclidae by Goldring (1967), Glaessner (1969) and Schweitzer et al. (2020).
