Mesoprosopon was named by Stolley (1914) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Mesoprosopon triasinum. It is the type genus of Mesoprosoponidae.

It was assigned to Brachyura by Stolley (1914); to Mesoprosopidae by Glaessner (1969); and to Cyclida by Sepkoski (2002).
