Chonetes pygmaea was named by Loczy (1899) [Chonetes cf. uralica var. pygmaea]. It is the type species of Costachonetes.
It was recombined as Costachonetes pygmaea by Waterhouse (1975), Liao (1979), Li et al. (1986) and Shen et al. (2017).
