Astropecten armatus was named by Forbes (1848). Its type specimen is Holotype BNHM OR 57501 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Cuneaster armatus by Hess (1955).

H. Hess 1955Disc large. Short, blunt arms, wide at base. Inferomarginal plates wide and short, rectangular. Well-defined, moderately deep intermarginal fascioles. External face of inferomarginals with tubercles of irregular size, frequently coalescent and forming oblique ridges in the adradial part. Ventrolateral area reduced extending only in the base of the arm.
