Taxonomy
Phasianus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type is Phasianus colchicus. It is the type genus of Phasianidae, Phasianinae.

It was assigned to Phasianinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); to Phasianini by Hou (1985); and to Phasianidae by Lambrecht (1933), Mlikovsky (2002) and Clements et al. (2017).
