Ammagnostus was named by Opik (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid-u Cm Dres-l Sepkoski's reference number: 16]. Its type is Agnostus fallax laiwuensis. It is the type genus of Ammagnostidae.
It was assigned to Agnostidae by Whittington et al. (1997); to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002); to Ammagnostidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Ammagnostinae by Jago et al. (2004).
