Aspidagnostus was named by Whitehouse (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant. Its type is Aspidagnostus parmatus. It is the type genus of Aspidagnostinae.
It was assigned to Clavagnostidae by Whittington et al. (1997); to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aspidagnostinae by Jago et al. (2004).
