Eucaenidae was named by Handlirsch (1906). Its type is Eucaenus.

It was assigned to Protoblattoidea by Handlirsch (1906), Handlirsch (1911), Handlirsch (1919) and Handlirsch (1922); and to Protorthoptera by Carpenter and Richardson (1976) and Carpenter (1992).
