Clavagnostus was named by Howell (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Clavagnostidae, Clavagnostinae.
It was assigned to Clavagnostidae by Whittington et al. (1997) and Jell and Adrain (2002); to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Clavagnostinae by Jago et al. (2004).
