Baurusuchia was named by Walker (1968). It was considered monophyletic by Montefeltro et al. (2011).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Baurusuchia by Ruiz et al. (2021) and Darlim et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Paracrocodylia by Walker (1970); to Xenodontosuchia by Ruiz et al. (2021); and to Notosuchia by Montefeltro et al. (2011) and Darlim et al. (2021).

Montefeltro et al. 2011Small to medium-sized mesoeucrocodylians with premaxillae-maxillae suture internalized in a notch for the reception of lower caniniform; alveolar margin of maxilla in lateral view arched anterior to enlarged caniniform tooth; anterior extension of palatines not reaching the level of the anterior margin of suborbital fenestrae; presence of the posteroventral depressions in the mandibular symphysis; orientation of terminus of mandibular symphysis anterodorsal, at approximately 45 degrees to jaw line; teeth with serrated mesial and distal carinae.
