Taxonomy
Aulosteges hispidus was named by Girty (1920). It is the type species of Sphenosteges.

It was recombined as Sphenosteges hispidus by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960), Logan and McGugan (1968) and Wardlaw (1977).
