Gryllavus was named by Sharov (1968). Its type is Gryllavus madygenicus. It is the type genus of Gryllavidae, Gryllavoidea.

It was assigned to Gryllidae by Sharov (1968) and Carpenter (1992); and to Gryllavidae by Gorochov (1986) and Gorochov (1995).
