Pruvostites was named by Zalessky (1928). Its type is Pruvostites takhtachurensis. It is the type genus of Pruvostitidae, Pruvostitinae.
It was assigned to Pruvostitidae by Zalessky (1928); to Oedischiidae by Sharov (1968) and Carpenter (1992); and to Pruvostitinae by Gorochov (1987) and Gorochov (1995).
