Branchiosauria was named as a suborder. It is not extant.

It was corrected as Branchiosauri by Gadow (1898); it was synonymized subjectively with Microsauria by Hay (1902); it was reranked as the order Branchiosauri by Jaekel (1911); it was synonymized subjectively with Phyllospondyli by Swinton (1934).

It was assigned to Lepospondyli by Gadow (1898); to Stegocephala by Moodie (1909); and to Hemispondyla by Jaekel (1911).
