Epimastax was named by Martynov (1928). It is the type genus of Epimastacidae.
It was assigned to Epimastacidae by Martynov (1928), Kukalová (1965) and Carpenter (1992); to Palaeomanteidae by Rasnitsyn (2004); and to Permosialidae by Rasnitsyn and van Dijk (2011) and Rasnitsyn and Aristov (2013).
