Australaspis was named by Palmer and Gatehouse (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm l]. Its type is Australaspis magnus.

It was assigned to Redlichiida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Saukiandidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
