Ammonites laevigatus was named by Sowerby (1827).

It was recombined as Agassiceras laevigatum by Hyatt (1874); it was recombined as Cymbites laevigatus by Buckman (1894), Smith and Tipper (1996) and Rakús and Guex (2002).
