Calopterygidae was named by Selys-Longchamps (1850). It is extant. Its type is Calopteryx.

It was synonymized subjectively with Agrionidae by Cockerell (1921).

It was assigned to Zygoptera by Carpenter (1992); and to Calopterygoidea by Bechly (2007) and Lin et al. (2010).
