Gigantopygus was named by Hupe (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l Sepkoski's reference number: 473]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Gigantopygidae.

It was assigned to Gigantopygidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Redlichiida by Sepkoski (2002).
