Cretopone magna was named by Dlussky (1975). Its type specimen is PIN 2284/14, an exoskeleton, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Kzyl-Zhar Locality (PIN collection 2284), which is in a Turonian pond mudstone in Kazakhstan.
