Hunanocephalus was named by Lee (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l Sepkoski's reference number: 463 In Egorova. Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l Sepkoski's reference number: 463]. It is not extant.

It was corrected as Hunnanocephalus by Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Corynexochida by Sepkoski (2002) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Oryctocephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Kiessling (2003).
