Hammapteryx was named by Scudder (1890). It is not extant. Its type is Hammapteryx reticulata.
It was assigned to Fulgoridae by Cockerell (1921); and to Ricaniidae by Scudder (1890), Piton (1940) and Szwedo et al. (2004).
