Taxonomy
Emydops oweni was named by Fröbisch and Reisz (2008). Its type specimen is SAM-PK-3721, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Avonleigh, which is in a Wuchiapingian floodplain mudstone in the Balfour Formation of South Africa.

Reisz 2008Tusked or tuskless emydopid dicynodont referable to the genus Emydops, but distinguishable from the senior synonym E. arctatus of the type species E. minor by the following autapomorphies: absence of the small round foramen in the maxilla lateral to the postcaniniform keel, presence of a distinct ventrolaterally projecting pterygoid flange, and the diagnostic shape of the lateral dentary shelf strongly overhanging the mandibular fenestra with convex dorsal and concave ventral surfaces.
