Shanghaia was named by Xu and Ju (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm l Sepkoski's reference number: ZR87]. It is not extant. Its type is Shanghaia typicalis.
It was assigned to Oryctocephalidae by Xu and Ju (1987); to Corynexochida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dolichometopidae by Jell and Adrain (2002).
