Proparagryllacris was named by Riek (1956). Its type is Proparagryllacris crassifemur. It is the type genus of Proparagryllacrididae, Proparagryllacridinae.
It was assigned to Proparagryllacrididae by Carpenter (1992); and to Proparagryllacridinae by Riek (1956), Gorochov (1987), Gorochov (1995), Wappler (2001) and Gorochov (2005).
