Euomphalus pugilis was named by Phillips (1836). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Phymatifer.
It was recombined as Straparollus pugilis by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Straparollus (Euomphalus) pugilis by Knight et al. (1960); it was recombined as Phymatifer pugilis by de Koninck (1881) and Zernetskaya (1967).
