Acanthopyge was named by Hawle and Corda (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 774].

It was assigned to Ceratarginae by Chatterton and Perry (1977); to Lichida by Sepkoski (2002); to Lichidae by Ebach and Ahyong (2001) and Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Trochurinae by Thomas and Holloway (1988) and Pollitt et al. (2005).
