Taxonomy
Naticopsis (Naticopsis) buttsi was named by Gordon and Yochelson (1982) [Naticopsis (Naticopsis?) buttsi
= Strophostylus carleyanus (Hall) of Butts 1941. ]. Its type specimen is USNM 98098, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is State highway 627, valley of Indian Creek, near Mouth of Laurel, which is in a Meramecian carbonate limestone/shale in the St. Louis Limestone Formation of Virginia.
