Akantharges was named by Phleger (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 774]. It is not extant. Its type is Lichas gourdoni.

It was assigned to Lichida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trochurinae by Thomas and Holloway (1988) and Pollitt et al. (2005).
