Apatolichas was named by Whittington (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 774]. Its type is Lichas jukesi.

It was assigned to Tetralichinae by Thomas and Holloway (1988); to Lichida by Sepkoski (2002); to Lichidae by Fortey and Droser (1999) and Jell and Adrain (2003); and to Tetralichini by Pollitt et al. (2005).
