Arctinurus was named by Castelnau (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m S Wenl-u replacement name for Platynotus Conrad 1838]. Its type is Paradoxides boltoni.

It was reranked as Lichas (Arctinurus) by Reed (1902).

It was assigned to Lichas by Reed (1902); to Lichinae by Thomas and Holloway (1988); to Lichidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); to Lichida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Platylichini by Pollitt et al. (2005).
