Amussium was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant. Its type is Ostrea pleuronectes.

It was reranked as Pecten (Amusium) by Dall (1898), Glenn (1904), Arnold (1906) and DuBar (1958); it was reranked as Pecten (Amussium) by Martin (1909) and Vredenburg (1928); it was corrected as Amusium by Oostingh (1935), Gardner (1943), Marasti (1973), Addicott (1974), Vokes (1980), Woodring (1982), Moore (1984), Gibson (1987), del Rio (1992), Todd (2001), Bouchet et al. (2010) and Smith et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Pecten by Dall (1898), Glenn (1904), Arnold (1906), Martin (1909) and Vredenburg (1928); to Propeamussiidae by Vokes (1980) and Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Amusiidae by Bouchet et al.
